Hiraya, under the last three moons
Once, the old tellings say, seven moons lit the sky over Hiraya. Then the Bakunawa rose from the sea, a serpent so vast it could swallow a moon whole, and one by one it ate them.
Three remain. The people bang their pots and pans to drive the serpent off, and they know it is still hungry.
Beneath the moons, the old spirits never left. The engkanto dwell in the great balete trees, and every balete is a doorway to their side. Somewhere in those roots lie the mutya: rare charms and pearls, said to grant powers no weapon can.
The Babaylan and the spirits of the Balete
Besides the Tao, play as an Aswang
They live among people by day. What they are at night is another matter.
Two capitals, two guardians
At the heart of each people's capital waits its champion. They are not beaten by numbers. They are learned: every blow shows itself before it falls.
- Read the tellEvery strike has its pose and its mark on the ground. Nothing lands unannounced.
- IwasA quick hop through the blow. Timed well, it passes right through you.
- Strike when it faltersAfter a heavy blow it is open. Break its footing and it falls to a knee.
